Read Aloud from My First Torah

The most special and set apart feast of the year is the Day of Atonement.

It is also called Yom Kippur.

This was the only day that the high priest could go into the most holy place where the Ark of the Covenant was.

The high priest had to prepare carefully for this day, because YHVH would appear in a cloud above the Ark.

The high priest bathed and then put on the high priest’s linen clothing.

He brought a bull and a ram for a burnt offering.

He began by making atonement for himself and his family.

Making atonement means to confess our sin before YHVH and do what we can to make it right.

The high priest then took two goats.

One goat was used for a sacrifice.

The other goat was sent into the wilderness after the high priest confessed the sins of the nation over it.

The high priest took the coals from the altar and put them inside on the Altar of Incense to make a cloud over the Mercy Seat.

He then sprinkled blood on the Ark of the Covenant from the sacrifices.

He was the only person allowed in with the Ark, and he could only go in once a year on Yom Kippur.

There were many things for the high priest to do on Yom Kippur, and he was careful to follow the steps exactly.

We should confess our sin everyday, but Yom Kippur is a day to search our lives for any sin we may not have confessed.

YHVH delights in the offerings from His people.

He chose the place where offerings should be brought.

They should always be brought to the Tabernacle, or the Temple.

They should not be offered anywhere a person wants.

YHVH commanded the people that they should never eat blood.

The life of an animal is in their blood, and we do not want to eat their life.

We also should not eat an animal that died by itself, and wasn’t properly butchered.

YHVH created boys and girls, and wants them to show respect for each other.

Torah teaches us that we should not see another person without their clothes.

We should keep our body covered properly.

We should also respect other people’s privacy by letting them change their clothes or take a bath by themselves.

There are many groups of people in the world that do not obey YHVH and His Torah.

We should not learn about their ways of doing things.

We obey YHVH and Him alone.

My First Torah is available as a full color paperback.
