Scripture passage: Numbers 4:21-7:89

Read Aloud from My First Torah

Moses counted all the sons of Kohath, from the tribe of Levi.

They had a very special job in the Tabernacle.

Whenever the Israelites traveled to a new camp, the Kohathites packed all the items from the Tabernacle and carried them.

Each item was covered with cloth and carried on poles.

The Kohathites carried each item and put them back up in the next camp.

Moses wrote down the names and totals of all the Kohathites.

He also gave them each jobs.

Each person knew what item they were to care for and carry.

Anyone who had the disease leprosy had to live outside the camp.

If a person touched a dead body, they also had to stay outside the camp for a time.

YHVH wanted the camp kept clean and set-apart.

YHVH knows that sometimes we make mistakes.

Sometimes we forget to obey.

As soon as we realize we did something wrong, we need to confess it.

We need to tell YHVH that we are sorry, and ask Him to forgive us.

He promises that He will.

We should also apologize to anyone that we hurt.

We need to make things right.

Torah teaches us how to make things right.

When there is a Tabernacle or a Temple, we also need to give an offering.

We are much more careful with our words and our actions if we know that an animal must die when we do wrong.

A husband and wife have a very special relationship.

They should not share this relationship with anyone else.

If they do, it is called adultery and it is wrong.

YHVH explained what a man should do if he thinks his wife has been unfaithful to him.

He is to take his wife to the priest.

The priest does a test to find out if the wife has been faithful to her husband.

The woman drinks some water called the water of bitterness.

If she had committed adultery, she would have great pain in her belly.

If she had been faithful to her husband, then she would be blessed with more children.

Sometimes people wanted to promise to spend special time with YHVH.

YHVH had a special plan for this called the Nazarite vow.

A Nazarite was not allowed to eat anything that came from grapes, including raisins and wine.

He could not cut his hair.

He could not touch a dead body.

When his time was complete, he gave special offerings to YHVH.

Aaron, as the high priest, was given a special blessing to say over the people.

May YHVH bless you and keep you. May YHVH make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. May YHVH lift His face to you and give you peace.”
