Read Aloud from My First Torah

The Children of Israel were now by the Jordan River waiting to cross over and enter the Promised Land.

Moses knew he would not be going with them.

He wanted to talk to them one last time.

He started by reminding them of all that had happened in the last 40 years.

He told them about the time at the mountain learning about Torah.

He reminded them of the first time they came to the Promised Land.

Moses had set up leaders over them, to teach the people Torah.

The spies had been sent into the land.

They found a good and fruitful land.

But the people refused to go in.

They were fearful of the people there.

Moses reminded them of how powerful YHVH was.

YHVH promised to give them the land.

But they still refused to go in.

So YHVH punished them.

He told them that they would wander in the wilderness for forty years.

All the people that had refused would die.

The children would enter the Promised Land instead.

Moses told the people about all their wilderness travels.

They had traveled through the land of Esau.

They traveled through the land of Moab.

YHVH told them to leave these people alone.

They had rights to the land they were living on.

But some people chose to fight against Israel.

The king of Sihon did not listen when Israel promised to quickly pass through his land.

They promised to buy their food and stay on the road.

He came out with his army.

But YHVH made sure that Israel won.

The king of Og also came out to fight against Israel.

But YHVH made sure that Israel won against him, too.

The king of Og was a giant, and Israel still won!

It was at this place that the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh settled their families.

They continued on to fight with the other tribes.

Moses told Joshua, the new leader, that YHVH would help him.

YHVH had defeated those two kings, and He would defeat the enemies in the Promised Land.

Joshua had nothing to be afraid of, because YHVH was on his side.
