Worship from an 8 year old

We’ve been working on developing some good habits lately. Many times we get a good thing in place and something happens to throw us off. With pregnancy and a newborn to care for, daily Bible study had become a thing of the past. So, we have been working very hard to make sure we study the Bible together every morning. We are using materials from www.torahclass.com. I printed off the entire Joshua study and bound it together in a book.

We read a bit every day, and talk about it. Then I give them some notebooking pages to review what we learned. Yesterday, we notebooked the three different lifestyles seen at the time of Abraham: nomadic, semi-nomadic and city dweller. Today we talked about Nimrod, pagan worship, etc. I was so excited when I saw Isaac’s page today. He went beyond what we talked about and showed that he really grasped the bigger picture. (YAY, mommy is so excited!)

Isaac idolsI love how he wrote that we should not only worship YHVH, but worship Him the way He says to. This is such an important concept for each of us to learn. As adults, we often have to unlearn things when we realize that our past was steeped in paganism. But, praise YHVH, He is helping us to teach our children a better way. Our children are learning to worship YHVH in the way He wants.

How are you including Bible study in your daily routine? If you aren’t, I would encourage you to make this a priority. Deuteronomy 6 reminds us of the importance of teaching our children about YHVH each and every day.

Hear, O Israel: YHVH our Elohim is one LORD:
And thou shalt love YHVH thy Elohim with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Start simple. Read a Psalm to your children every day. If you have older children, pick a time to study together every day. Pick a time that you can be consistent with every day. For us, that time is right after breakfast. We spend about twenty minutes reading, then the kids notebook what we talked about. We highly recommend the studies from www.torahclass.com. If you like the notebooking idea, we suggest the free pages at www. notebookingpages.com.

UPDATE 2015: We are currently working through the Old Testament, an Old Testament Survey as it were. We are currently studying together right after the kitchen jobs are done after dinner. We are loving using the Picture Smart Bible. The kids each have a workbook with a page for each book of the Bible. It is a detailed drawing that, when finished, provides an illustrated summary of the book. They fill in a little at a time as we work through the study. Please keep in mind that this is from a traditional Christian perspective.  I have the written material as the teacher, and I rephrase, skip, or elaborate as I see fit. We have had some excellent discussions about various topics. The kids love being able to draw and color as they learn. Anytime we can get more than the ears engaged, it’s a good thing. Win, win!
