The Truth Reformation 2.0 Book Review

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

John 8:44 ESV

Satan does one thing really well, and that is to lie. It would be amazing if we truly understood this fact and could see lies with neon lights, enabling us to easily distinguish truth from lie. But we are literally surrounded by lies, many not so easy to recognize. Many of you, like me, have recognized the lies being taught in the school, and you began teaching your children yourself. You know that governments regularly cover their actions with lies. You recognized that organized religion is a hotspot for lies.

But we don’t want to ever settle in, thinking we have sifted the last lie out of our lives. Truth must be tested, and lies must be discarded. Since there are no neon lights to help us, we must study. We must know the Scriptures (our one source of truth). We must learn to be honest with ourselves and not look at Scripture with preconceived ideas. We must be Bereans, testing what we are taught, and comparing everything to the truth of Scripture.

That’s why I was thrilled when Luke and Kayte Abaffy approached me to review their new book, ‘The Truth: Reformation 2.0.’ I’ll be honest. I didn’t expect to learn much because we left the church way back in 2007, and have been doing our best to follow Yeshua and keep Torah ever since. Surely I know how to defend my position.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:2 ESV

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I still have plenty to learn. Luke wrote about arguments I didn’t even know existed, and explained truth in easy to understand, fresh ways. So let’s take a look at ‘The Truth.’

What is The Truth: Reformation 2.0

We all know the story, how Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the church door, to expose the lies being taught in the church at that time. While he did important work in revealing the many theological problems of the day, he did not complete the work. We were all taught some serious misconceptions by organized religion, particularly in regards to Torah. This book acts like a second posting on the door, showing us the lies that remain.

How is it structured?

The first word that came to mind when I started reading the book is logical. It is always difficult to grasp a concept when the author gets too wordy, or distracted by side issues. While emotions can play an important role in presenting an argument, logic and well-organized facts are invaluable.

Luke does a great job of laying out factual arguments. He starts with a contradiction often taught in modern theology. Then he explains why it is a contradiction, and the truth that should replace it. The entire book is based on the solid truth that we must always come to the conclusion that doesn’t create contradictions. If we come away from Scripture with a conclusion that counters other parts of Scripture, we need to look again. All of Scripture supports all the rest of Scripture. In this book, Luke walks us through 25 contradictions created by modern religious teaching.

Why is it so important for us to understand these contradictions and why they don’t hold water? Because these contradictory teachings have led several generations to ignore the Torah and instead define their own rules based on what feels good. Some would refer to that as personal conviction. As Torah believers, we need to know why we believe as we do, and we need to be able to explain our why to others.

How can it help me?

There are three key ways you can use this book.

  • You will know exactly why you believe as you do, and why following the Torah is still important.
  • You will be able to explain these facts to those who question you.
  • For the interested but skeptical person in your life, you can give them a copy of this book to help them come to logical conclusions.

First, it is so important that we, as believers, continually check ourselves and our beliefs. Truth can and should be tested. I thought I was in good shape going into this book, but learned that I have plenty of room to strengthen my faith. I found the book very helpful in reinforcing my beliefs and reminding me where in the Bible these truths can be found. As I quoted earlier, we need to renew our minds. We need to know what the Bible says.

Second, we need to be able to articulate these truths to those who inquire.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Colossians 4:6 ESV

Just like we don’t have to think about things like alphabetical order, defending our faith should be second nature. This doesn’t just happen. We need to study. We need to know why we keep Torah, and follow Yeshua. We need to know how the back of the Bible supports the front of the Bible. Luke has done a great job of presenting each of these contradictions followed by what Scripture actually says. It is our job to learn and study the material, so that we have the confidence to share these truths with others.

Third, we may come across people who ask us about our faith, but can’t get past what they have been taught in the past. If they are willing to seek truth, but need help understanding, this book can be presented to them. I wouldn’t recommend just handing a book to someone who is just argumentative. That is the moment for explaining the truth in little bits. But since this book is laid out very logically and to the point, it can be an excellent tool for helping someone wrap their head around these revolutionary ideas like “the law still applies today.”
