Exodus 35:2 lesson plan

March 26, 2020 by Heidi Leave a Comment

Looking for a simple way to incorporate some Scripture and simple learning into your homeschool? These worksheets and resources are just the thing. The worksheets can be downloaded by simply clicking on the image. They have a verse for copywork, and some simple science or history related activities to go with the verse. I have also included links to additional coloring pages, videos, and activities that will go along with the verse. Today’s lesson is all about Exodus 35:2.

All verses are from the Webster Bible, translated by Noah Webster in 1833, and part of the public domain.

Exodus 35:2

Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD:

Exodus 35:2a

Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath-day.

Exodus 35:3

Character lesson

Read Exodus 35:1-3 in your choice of translation.

YHVH gave us a wonderful gift called the Sabbath. It is a chance to put aside all our normal work and take a day off. We don’t do normal activities like making money, buying things, or even household jobs like cleaning and cooking. Children get a day off school! These verses teach us a couple important things about the Sabbath, or Shabbat. First, it is holy to Yah. We set aside our work to spend time with Him.

The following activities are great for Shabbat.

  • Reading and copying Scripture.
  • Singing praise songs.
  • Prayer.
  • Learning more about the Bible through teachings, videos, books, etc.
  • Resting.
  • Spending time in creation.

This passage also instructs us to not kindle a fire on the Sabbath. I believe this has two meanings. First, kindling a fire takes a concerted effort, from gathering burnable materials, to nurturing the tiny flame into a fire. This is an awful lot of work for a day of rest.

Secondly, I think kindling a fire can be referring to our relationship with others. We should be careful with our attitude and responses to others. This is important on every day of the week. But, it seems that Yah wants us to make a special effort to create a day of peace on the Sabbath. We should not pick fights, argue, whine, or otherwise kindle “emotional fires” on the Sabbath. Our words and actions should speak only kindness to others.

Exodus 35:2

**Note to parents: Teaching our children Torah and how YHVH wants us to live should be part of each school day, but it can feel overwhelming knowing how to start and how to go about it. I created a simple system called Torah Learning Made Simple to help you get started this week.

Worksheet

Today’s worksheet will focus on our key verse: Exodus 35:2. You will be exploring the elements needed for fire, as well as fire safety. You will also explore the six days of work.

Today’s lesson will focus on fire, how to build one, how to be safe around fire, and lessons from one of the most famous fires, the Great Chicago Fire. Let’s get started.

First up, let’s talk about fire safety. Does your family have an emergency plan in place in case of a fire? Everyone needs to know how to best get out of the house, and where to meet if anything goes wrong. You may even want to set up a buddy system so that your children can help each other escape. Once you have a plan in place, have everyone practice getting out of the house and meeting at your designated location. We have a pasture fence on the opposite side of our front yard, easy to get to, and far enough away from the house to be safe. When you practice, make it fun by timing yourselves, but definitely emphasis the importance of safety and getting out of the house when needed. Here are some coloring pages to reinforce fire safety, as well as a website with online activities.

Do you know how to build a fire? If you keep Sukkot in the fall, you have probably tried! Here is a short video showing a reliable way to build a campfire.

One of the most famous fires in recent history is the Great Chicago fire. The entire city was built of wood, and it didn’t take much for the entire city to end up in flames. This video will get you started learning about this very important event. I encourage you to learn more through books or additional resources.

The following link has more info and several pictures you may want to print to add to a timeline or notebook.
