The story of the Maccabees is a tremendous historical event that centers around the rededication of YHVH’s temple. Many of the modern celebrations and retellings center around fictional accounts and sensationalism. The real story is so incredible that I see no need to make things up. At our home, we tell the real story, no miracle of the oil, etc.
The actual accounts found in 1 Maccabees are not for the faint of heart. Several years ago, I wrote a read-aloud story to tell my children in an accessible way.
